In this charming French easy reader, the adventures of Don Quichotte are given in two versions: one in present tense, and one in past tense.
Don Quijote, le dernier chevalier is a unique, funny and tragical story from the world literature. Although the action takes place in Spain, it is absolutely worth reading in French. Don Quichotte is an elderly, skinny man who has read too many novels about knighthood. His imagination leads him to believe that he himself is a knight, who has to defend princesses. He goes on an adventure with Sancho Panza, who watches in amazement as Don Quichotte flings himself into bizarre adventures.
The story is based on Miguel de Cervantes' El ingenioso hidalgo Don Quijote de La Mancha, which was published in the 17th century, and which is considered to be one of the best novels ever written.
"I once read the orignal version of Don Quijote, a voluminous novel with many, many adventures. It wouldn't be possible to include all those adventures in such a short easy reader, but in my view, the author has succesfully captured the atmosphere and characters of the original. The adventures she describes are very funny, and the illustrations are beautiful."
Information for teachers
Each version of the story contains 1400 words in total, based on less than 200 unique words. That makes the story very accessible to beginners with some basic knowledge of Spanish. The funny action scenes are perfect for acting out in the classroom.
